The cross of medical science

“The cross of medical science”, as Dr. A.M.E. Vrancken characterized the problem in her dissertation 1n 1989. (1).

To patients who suffer pain this characterization is still important. There are all kinds of new treating methods, but this only rarely gives any solace. We still do not really know what causes chronic pain We still do not really know how to deal with it.

On the first of April 2000 NWO (the subsidy institution for Scientific Investigation in the Netherlands) says on the website:”There is no scientific base for the treatment of chronic pain., a conclusion resulting from an investigation by the University of Maastricht in cooperation with the Free University in Amsterdam.

A large referring circuit is being mentioned in which doctors try to do their utmost best by “trial and error“.

What is chronic pain?

According to the definition of the IASP(International Association for the Study of Pain) chronic pain is an unpleasant feeling or an emotional experience, with real or possible tissue damage or described in terms of it. The duration is more than six months. There is a discussion about the duration.
